The Government of Spain extends Valdelentisco distribution network to supply desalinated water to new irrigation (28/10/2009)

The Council of State Directors of the company Aguas del Segura Basin (AcuaSegura), chaired by José Salvador Fuentes Zorita, today approved the extension of Section III (Conduct of Alhama de Murcia and Carrascoy Raft) of the distribution network Valdelentisco the desalination plant, which will provide more desalinated water to irrigators who have requested it.

The planned investment amounts to EUR 960,000 plus VAT.

This agreement provides for the placement of a pipeline of 3,000 meters with a diameter of 500 mm, to provide service to irrigators in the town of Alhama de Murcia, on the border with the municipality of Murcia, who have called for the provision of 1 hm3 year from the desalination Valdelentisco.

The Section III consists of a pipeline that, starting from the core leadership of the section II, extends over 19,600 meters (over 3,000 meters future) with pipe between 500 and 900 mm in diameter, up to near the town of Murcia.

At the end of it has implemented a raft of 500,000 m3 of capacity, and in the future could serve, from this point, the metropolitan area of Murcia.

Remember that the desalination plant is the first Valdelentisco public Segura Basin, which manages and provides flow to farmers, in this case, Mazarrón, Campo de Cartagena and Guadalentín Valley.

The total investment of the five parts of the network reached 100 million euros, with the global (plant, distribution network and network channels Commonwealth Taibilla) reaches 250 million euros.

The distribution network has led to the construction of four ponds of 2,600,000 m3 of aggregate capacity (about three football fields and the Santiago Bernabeu and the Nou Camp full of water) and hundreds of miles of pipelines.

The Valdelentisco desalination is prepared to produce up to 70 cubic hectometres (hm 3), although since 2007 and supplies 20 per year for urban supply hm3 (tipped higher production in summer), and since this past summer, 15 hm3 for agricultural use.

The desalination plant, distribution network and the connection to the Cartagena Channel Commonwealth of TCM, are included in the Water Programme of the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, and are financed by the European Regional Development Fund ( ERDF).
