Alhama opens first Badger Pass Wildlife enabled in our region (19/06/2009)

The mayor of Alhama de Murcia, Juan Romero Canovas, with director general of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, Pablo Fernandez and the Water Commissioner of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura, Manuel Aldeguer, inaugurated this morning the first step to Badger Wildlife is indicated in the region in the Rambla Celada to its junction with the N-340.

Fauna opened El Paso has its origin in the Badger Project, an environmental volunteer initiative developed by the Group Scout Valle de Leyva de Alhama de Murcia, in collaboration with Meles, association for the study and conservation of nature, the Sierra Regional Park Espuña and the city of Alhama de Murcia, which is part of Local Agenda 21.

The project's objective was to develop a public awareness towards the conservation of one of the most endangered mammal species in our region, the Badger (Meles meles).

Some of the best colonies of this species are found in areas of high traffic volume, as is the case near Rambla Celada.

Once uncovered the sign that says we are one step fauna, the present authorities have stressed the importance of these actions with the important purpose of preserving our environment.

Also, the mayor of the municipality has stressed the importance to our town is the environment.

Not surprisingly, the local Town Hall is developing a number of actions aimed in this direction as the bike Alhama project soon to be increased and that thanks to him, the locals can go biking around the city comfortably.

The mayor also stressed the importance that this project has been the work of volunteers, in particular the Group Socut Valle de Leyva.

Those in attendance also had the opportunity to visit a Dachshund and learn first hand how this species lives in Alhama has a small population of about 10 copies.

The reports of the Regional Park of Sierra Espuña about the numerous cases of abuse of badgers in the vicinity of the ravine, caused by the continuous flow of species from the area on both sides of the national highway N340, advised to take preventive measures to reduce the number of accidents, especially since this place is also configured as an important step of foxes, hedgehogs, cats, pigs, rodents, reptiles.

Among the measures that can be taken include the steps of fauna.

For Celada Rambla has involved:

.

Road signs: reduction of speed in this area, the maximum allowed of 90 km / h.

50 km / h., marked with the appropriate signage, installation of rumble strips to moderate traffic speed in that section.

.

Maintaining cleanliness of the avenue to facilitate the transit of animals.

.

Installing a poster of "Passing fauna."

Indicates that we are in a very special area for vertebrate fauna and is used as a passage for many animals, including badgers.

Warns that some species have suffered abuses by being forced to cross the road, so it is important to keep the area in good condition so that these species may continue to use that as a transit zone.
