43 people debate the future of the Canyons in Gebas and its environment (28/07/2008)

On 9 July the village of Gebas alhameña had unusual activity.

The Directorate General of the Environment meeting at the Social Hall that the residents are next to the Chapel to a total of 43 people whose social or professional activity is connected with the area.

And not just Gebas but also Source Librilla, broom, Salada and other places in the neighboring towns of Mula and booklets.

And is that the protected landscape of ravines Gebas and surrounding areas are still a few months ago the subject of intense research and planning to establish management measures that stimulate ecological and socioeconomic area.

The Directorate General of the Environment, through the consultant Ecoespuña, SL, is touring the area with his team of economists, biologists, sociologists, geographers, surveyors, etc., To hear the concerns of its neighbors and landlords, to identify the main cultural and natural values and propose courses of action to improve conditions of life in this rural setting.

During this time he has visited every corner of the 6,300 hectares of the area and conducted over 20 interviews and 700 surveys among the resident population, visitors and towns of Alhama, Mula and booklets.

An important part of this process was the workshop on Citizen Participation.

Farmers, restaurateurs, entrepreneurs, residents and owners only, village headman, representatives of neighborhood associations in the area or Librilla women, hunters, environmentalists, Mayor of Alhama and councilors of the municipality and Librilla Mula, experts from the Directorate General del Medio Natural, District Agricultural Office or the three councils in the area, discussed during the day on July 9 on the measures needed in the area.

The workshop was presented by Philo Provencio, Managing Director of Ecoespuña, SL, who gave a brief explanation of the path taken to reach this game.

Later, Juan de Dios Cabezas, Director-Curator of the Regional Park of Sierra Espuña and Head of Game, Fish River and the Natural Defense, made a brief presentation on "Environmental Values in the arid" and emphasized the commitment that his Department has with this area and this work.

Then, Cayetano García Rosa, Manager Comprehensive Rural Development Society, spoke on "Social and economic values of rural areas."

After presenting the document "Strategic Plan key Gebas and its surroundings, attendees were organized into 6 working groups to discuss Social Dynamism, Natural Heritage, Cultural Heritage, Productive Systems, Infrastructure and Institutional Management.

The good mood continued throughout the day that made it possible for all participants will select a total of 45 measures from the 131 proposed by the drafting team.

Maintenance of traditional farming systems, promotion and preservation of almond and development of organic agriculture, restoration of buildings with heritage interest, improving the urban fabric and Gebas Librilla Source, design of ecotourism routes and adequacy of certain infrastructure such as roads Access to the area or wastewater treatment, were some of the most accepted measures were.

This work, which from the outset designed to be participatory in the whole process, from input on the needs of the area until the decision-making in a democratic way, is now in its concluding phase with the establishment of competence in each subject, methods of implementation and funding of these 45 measures selected.

Attendees appreciated the workshop and some residents of the area was a great and pleasant surprise to get so many people together in Social Hall Gebas, proving that its demands were heard and know that the intention is to answer the Natural Environment them through the development of this plan.
