Ecologists in Action alleges Paramount Theme Park (21/02/2012)

They denounce the limited public interest and the illusion of the inflated numbers of jobs that are trying to sell the project to the public

Ecologists in Action has stated in its submissions to the "Project-Recreational Resort Paramount Theme Park," the theme parks are dubious business profitability.

This is demonstrated by the Spanish projects that have needed financial assistance from the government, in its origin, its implementation, and when they are in crisis during their operation.

Behind these projects, the regional governments, local real estate groups, not detail what will now return on these parks and their surroundings.

Significant examples demonstrate the dubious future for the operation and management of these projects.

Thus, the Terra Mitica theme park began with a strong boost from regional public administration and savings, but years later over, like most projects of its kind in the Spanish state, with significant deficits.

Environmentalists point out that economic analysts warn that [1] "The results of the analysis of liquidity, solvency and profitability of Spanish parks show in general a negative situation and expected future developments very encouraging, rather than an attractive segment within the tourism sector, have proven to be a ruinous business. "

The usual outcome is that once the landowners have made huge gains from its redevelopment, is that the activity of the park which was taken as an excuse short of expectations of business to be promising.

Languishes and the company responsible for the "park" and calls for more public money and more buildable land in the operation, with new capital gains to offset the financial fiasco of the activity that initially justified the "operation". [2]

The performance of Paramount complex would also have other additional impacts, such as the construction of two new links to the motorway, the modification of existing roads, construction of viable and disseminating new horizons impacts to surrounding uses, encouraging and providing new land transformations.

Also mean a huge increase in water consumption compounding the regional water deficit.

Studies show that the compact city model Mediterranean consumes between 110 and 140 liters per person per day, while tourism models and low-density residential consume about 400 liters per person per day, three times.

Ecologists in Action believes that the proposed project is a real waste off the necessary rational and sustainable management of water in the Autonomous Community of Murcia, favoring activities with high consumption of water resources while having little or no social benefit .

On the other hand, Paramount would create complex and worsening other environmental impacts, among which include: the creation of barriers and isolation of natural populations of natural and rural environments to come, the substantial increase in waste production and impacts associated with their management, the significant increase in wastewater generation and the impacts caused by them (collapse of existing plants, odors, spills insufficiently refined ...), the increase of traffic and its serious environmental problems, the spread to natural areas and nearby rural air pollution, noise and light, and an increased barrier effect.

This inevitably degrades the quality of life of the next environments.

Ecologists in Action requires the Regional Government to change the current model based on ladrillazo and mega-projects, whose failure has been amply demonstrated, and another model with a commitment to more sustainable, diversified and beneficial for society as a whole Murcia.
