A kind of duck declared global extinction, has found its habitat in Alhama (16/02/2011)

Together with the municipal waste in the Industrial Park Las Salinas, there are several shortcomings with purified water that some time is playing the ruddy duck, a rare species of duck, declared global extinction and the 1% the world's total population in our region.

The finding has been that the area is protected through the European project LIFE.

This morning, the director general of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, Pablo Fernández with the mayor of Alhama, José Espadas and various members of the government team visited the lakes.

Campotéjar gaps in Molina de Segura, gaps in Alhama de Murcia and gaps in Mazarrón The Mulberry, harbor large populations of white-headed duck.

The LIFE project that recently the EU has given to the Region of Murcia for the protection of the areas mentioned, has a budget of 1,342,103 euros, 75% financed by funds from the EU LIFE, a 20.60 % by region and a 4.40% as the contribution of the three municipalities of the project partners.

The European Union has already advanced some 400,000 euros.

These wetlands store a pre-purified water to be used later for agriculture, so have become spaces that have a dual social and economic role, acting as reservoirs for agricultural use of water previously purified.

Ecological freshwater habitat that attracts a large number of species of waterfowl, with special reference to populations of white-headed duck, which are the most numerous in the European Union and relevant in the global context.

So this is a demonstration project of a model of "sustainable development", which enhances the added value of the conservation of highly endangered species in the global context, using in Murcia transformed by human habitats, which have a structure and artificial water intake, with a treated water is then used for irrigation.

The objectives of this project are to reconcile biodiversity conservation with agricultural use, improve and expand the habitat of the species in these wetlands, minimize the risks of anthropogenic impact on the Malvasia and their habitat through the development of interpretive paths, observatories birds and other actions to facilitate the observation of birds and other wildlife at the lowest possible human impact, develop a monitoring program of the ruddy duck, other species dependent on these wetlands and those environmental parameters that determine reproduction , disclose the project developed in the Murcia region in general and particularly in those municipalities where wetlands are located object of this project, and finally, ensure the long-term conservation of the species in the Region of Murcia, once completion of the project, to be held since last October 2010 to September 2014, the General Directorate of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, along with the municipalities in Molina de Segura, Mazarrón and Alhama de Murcia.

Campotéjar gaps consist of five ponds of a former treatment plant waste water lagoons, now operating as ponds that store water for agricultural use, as well as gaps in Alhama, which are formed by two basins with similar characteristics .

The Las Moreras consist of 4 derelict ponds receiving sewage water current by a gravel pit.

Over time, these three spaces have become naturalized in the growth of a main belt of reeds around the edges, resulting in three lake complex naturalized attractive to large numbers of vertebrates among them birds, especially waterfowl.

Blue-billed duck

White-headed duck is a duck species whose distribution has been fragmented and reduced over the last century.

The Spanish population is the only currently existing in Europe.

This situation that is classified as 'endangered' on the World Catalogue of Endangered Species and listed in Annex I of the European Birds Directive.

The most striking feature of this species of endangered birds lies in the striking peak of male pigmented a beautiful aqua blue color that contrasts vividly with the white head.

Also, the tail is long and wedding season is often found erect.

The female has the chin, throat and cheeks light, crossed by a dark stripe from the base of the beak to the nape.
