Feast for cannibals´ by Juan Carlos Fernández wins the XVII Alfonso Martínez-Mena Short Story Contest (07/11/2020)

| The second prize has gone to Estaban Torres, with his story 'All the truth about the coup' | The qualifying jury of the XVII Alfonso Martínez-Mena Short Story Literary Contest failed the awards today, after evaluating the 28 finalist works out of the 1,710 that have been presented in this edition. The group that has evaluated the works has been made up of José Belmonte, Professor of Language and Literature at the University of Murcia, Pablo Blesa, Vice-Rector for International Relations and Communication at UCAM, Antonio Arco, journalist, and Marisa López, writer.

The Councilor for Culture and Heritage, María José López, has served as secretary, and Mariola Guevara, mayor of Alhama de Murcia, has chaired the jury.After deliberation, they have unanimously agreed to award the first prize, consisting of 3,000 euros, to the work entitled 'Feast of cannibals', presented under the pseudonym 'Green flies'.

Open the escrow nº 513, its author has turned out to be Juan Carlos Fernández, a native of Fuenlabrada (Madrid).Also by majority, they have awarded the second prize, consisting of 1,500 euros, to the work entitled 'All the truth about the coup', presented under the pseudonym 'Bámbola'.

Open the escrow nº 463, its author has been Esteban Torres, a native of Úbeda (Jaén).Given the situation derived from the Covid-19 pandemic, the jury's decision and the award ceremony of the XVII edition of this contest, scheduled for June, had to be postponed until November.The jury has recorded the high number of works presented one more year to the contest from all over Spain, Europe, America and Asia, as well as their literary quality.

Of the 1,710 stories received in the 2020 call, a first selection was made in which a total of 28 were selected, of which the final jury selected six, from among which the two winners have been.The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2020 in the plenary hall of the Alhama de Murcia City Council.Juan Carlos Fernández is from Madrid.

Graduate in Hispanic Philology from the Complutense University of Madrid.

He currently works as a language and literature teacher at the Dolores Ibarruri Institute in Fuelabrada.

He has published the book of stories 'De Sótanos y azoteas' (Castalia, 2010), with which he won the XX TIFLOS Short Story Award.

He has obtained, in a short story, the Miguel d Unamuno Short Story Award, the Avila National Journalist Award, the town of Mazarrón, the Alsa Short Story Competition and the José Calderón Escalada.
