This Monday, October 19, the World Day to Fight Breast Cancer is celebrated. The Alhama City Council wants to show its support to all the people who fight against this disease, for which one more year they will carry out two initiatives:At 11:30 a.m.

the pink ribbon will be placed on the balcony of the Town Hall, accompanied by members of the AECC.At 8:30 p.m.

the lighting of pink lights will take place, which will illuminate the facade of the Town Hall every night during the week.The municipality of Alhama thus joins the fight against this disease, which suffers one in eight women throughout their lives. Prevention programSince 1994, a breast cancer prevention program has operated in the Region of Murcia.

This program is based on the periodic monitoring of this serious condition in women between the ages of 50 and 69 by performing biannual x-rays of the breasts (or mammograms).

This technique allows the diagnosis of cancer and treatment when it can still be cured, so the collaboration of women is essential.

Every year the general directorate of Public Health summons by letter an average of 1,400 women who, in that age range, are summoned to the mobile unit that is installed in Alhama for a couple of weeks to perform these mammograms.Thanks to this program, it has been possible to verify how the survival of women diagnosed with breast cancer increased, being up to 95% when the diagnosis takes place in the first year of development This program is coordinated by the General Directorate of Public Health of the Ministry of Health and has the collaboration of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), the Health Center and the Alhama City Council.
