The cut flower sector, pending the end of the year to decide its future (30/09/2020)

The Alhameña company Beneflor has been visited today by the mayor, Mariola Guevara, the Councilor for Agriculture, Antonio José Caja, and three deputies from the Regional Assembly, Diego Conesa, Magdalena S.

Blesa and Fernando Moreno.

There they have visited the facilities of this merchant in the cut flower sector -one of the most important in the Region of Murcia- accompanied by their manager, Francisco Benedicto, who has taken stock of the situation experienced these months and has guided them through the different greenhouses available in the area.Beneflor, a company dedicated to the production of flower crops since 1972, currently has eight hectares dedicated to the intensive cultivation of cut flowers in its own greenhouses.

It is one of the most innovative companies in its sector in Spain, this is reflected in all its facilities, equipped with the most advanced technologies, as well as a specific development area for new varieties, which allow Beneflor to increase its productive potential, counting on the lightest materials and the most modern climate control systems, irrigation, heating, lighting and automation, thus achieving efficient cultivation.Guevara has shown his support, pointing out that "the cut flower sector was one of them most affected since the state of alarm was declared, since its activity had to be paralyzed in the months when they usually have more work." He also added that "it is essential that the Assembly work with the Autonomous Community, that the regional government be sensitive to this sector and promote all kinds of aid to overcome this health and economic crisis.

Aid that must come from all administrations: local, regional and national ".After the fall in business volume, which has lost up to half a million euros a day in the Region at the beginning of this pandemic, according to data from the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Murcia (Fecoam), the proximity of All Day Santos becomes an opportunity to promote, encourage and reactivate this sector.Conesa has transferred that "they claim us to offer security and the guarantee that all users can have access to buy flowers in florists or temporary establishments and put them to their loved ones on All Saints' Day." In addition, he continued, "In the Regional Assembly we will demand what the regional government announced last August, specific aid for the cut flower sector that is not yet effective and we will demand that it be as soon as possible, such as the measures announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and that they will be approved imminently and published in the Official State Gazette ". Francisco Benedicto, head of the company, has reported how "between March and May 50% of the annual production was thrown away." In March and April the losses reached 700,000 euros.

"The only thing we have in the short term, since there are no weddings - which is where the flower is mainly consumed - is All Saints' Day.

Depending on what happens these months, we will try to move forward or not," he says.
