September 21, World Alzheimer's Day (21/09/2020)

This Monday, September 21, World Alzheimer's Day is commemorated, a neurodegenerative disease that involves the progressive loss of neurons, the abnormal accumulation of amyloid protein (amyloid) and characteristic lesions in senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles.

All of this triggers Alzheimer's, the most common known form of dementia.During the phases in which this disease develops, initially there is loss of memory and spatial temporal disorientation.

In a second phase, the patient loses fluency in language, has difficulty dressing and needs constant help to carry out daily activities.

In the advanced phase, the disability is profound and cannot be self-sufficient.

His personality undergoes irreversible alterations, he stops talking, he does not recognize his relatives and he presents urinary and fecal incontinence.

Likewise, muscle rigidity increases, so that he is progressively confined to a wheelchair and then to bed.

In addition, other complications such as anxiety, anguish, aggressiveness or depression appear. There is currently no curative treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

However, there are pharmacological therapies and non-pharmacological therapies (psychosocial interventions) that aim to slow down the deterioration process, trying to maintain autonomy and preserved capacities for as long as possible. The city council wants to collaborate by making visible this degenerative disease in which more than 1,200,000 people have been diagnosed in our country. The psychologist from Alhameña, Aida Cano, clarifies certain myths and false beliefs about Alzheimer's, such as that it affects only memory, it also affects the cognitive process, emotionally, language or behavior.
