More than 30,000 specimens of red palm weevil captured since 2012 (13/06/2020)

Since 2017 the population of red palm weevil, which affects palm trees, has remained stable in Alhama de MurciaThe Department of Parks and Gardens and the Environment are carrying out a sampling in thirty-two points, distributed throughout the population, in order to establish the weevil population that is attacking our palm trees.

According to the registered data, between June 2012 and December 2019, more than 30,000 specimens of this species were captured, against which the City Council conducts periodic treatments. The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) is a deep red beetle that is 2 to 5 centimeters long and 1 to 2 cm wide.

It is mainly distinguished by its clumsy flight and a large horn-like appendage on its head.

It was introduced in Spain, coming from Egypt, in the year 1994.

The females of this insect are in charge of depositing their eggs in the trunk of the palm tree, thus starting the cycle.

After the hatching of these eggs, some larvae appear that make galleries until they reach the interior of the trunk.

Once maturity is reached, the larva is wrapped in a capsule, also known as a 'croquette', in which they remain inert until their transformation into a chrysalis or pupa, to close the cycle with the appearance of an adult specimen. This usually takes refuge in the palm tree while there is matter with which to feed. This study has allowed us to establish at what time of year a greater number of insects is present, to know which areas of the municipality are most affected and the evolution of the pest itself.

For this, a treatment calendar has been created in order to have greater control over this pest.
