City Council and educational community ensure that three-year-old children's classrooms are not closed in Alhama (10/06/2020)

The Minister of Education, María Esperanza Moreno, reconsiders the initial decision and communicates, minutes after the meeting, that all the children's classrooms in the municipality are maintainedThe mayor of Alhama de Murcia, Mariola Guevara, met this morning with the general director of Educational Planning and Human Resources of the Autonomous Community, Víctor Marín.

A meeting in which she was accompanied by the Councilor for Education, María José López, the director of the CEIP Sierra Espuña, the president and treasurer of the center's AMPA.The meeting took place after last June 3, in the infant and primary schooling process, the inspector communicated to the schooling commission that a 3-year-old classroom for children from the Sierra Espuña school was abolished, which would leave outside the center, children who have applied for their place there, having to relocate them to other schools. Both the City Council and the CEIP did not share this decision, arguing that the application data for this course is very similar to that of the previous one.

"It is clear that the classrooms are not completed and the ratios do not reach 25 students, but they must also study the scenario that is proposed for the next academic year," said Guevara.

In this sense, the mayor explained that "in September we cannot have classrooms saturated with children, since the new security and social distancing measures must be complied with.

Something that, with the ratios that would remain when deleting a classroom for children from 3 years, it would be very difficult.

"The Alhama delegation has made this situation visible to Marín, highlighting that "the data has changed since last Wednesday, increasing the number of requests." Alhama is a municipality where school requests are increasing throughout the school year, influenced by the generation of employment and the constant movement of families. Guevara has expressed that "we have not only come to ask that the classroom in the Sierra Espuña not be abolished, but also that of no other school in the municipality, so as not to harm the educational quality, freedom of choice of parents' center and, above all, the child safety.

"The director general indicated during the meeting that he was going to study the situation in Alhama and that tomorrow, Thursday, June 11, when the provisional lists were published, he would communicate the decision.

Minutes later, the Minister of Education, María Esperanza Moreno, has contacted the Mayor to confirm that no three-year-old children's classroom will finally be closed in the town for the next academic year.

Marín has also officially announced it to the director of the center. Both the City Council and the CEIP Sierra Espuña management have thanked this decision.

"I am glad that they have weighed the petition and taken into account the exceptional situation we are experiencing, and that they share with us the commitment to public education in Alhama," Guevara concluded.
