The local government meets in Leon with the consultant Antonio Freire to define the new thermal center of Alhama (07/02/2020)

The mayor of Alhama de Murcia, Mariola Guevara, and the Councilors for Infrastructure, Antonio García, Hacienda, Felipe García, and Urbanismo, Antonio José Caja, close today a two-day trip to the Leon municipality of Santa María del Páramo in which they have He was able to visit and get to know the León Termal Sport spa firsthand.

A center that opened its doors in 2011, at the initiative of the City Council, and which is managed through a joint venture.

This Thursday afternoon they had a meeting with the former mayor of the municipality and promoter of the project, Miguel Ángel del Egido, as well as with those responsible for the spa, to learn more about his experience and the contingencies of a municipal project of this type.

Today a meeting was held with the consultant Antonio Freire, who manages, among others, León Termal Sport, and who is also responsible for the study for the thermal and wellness center in Alhama de Murcia, prepared by Gala Termal Consulting in 2017 and published since that date on the municipal website.

In the meeting, which has also joined the councilman of that municipality, Marcos Montiel, a review of this work has been done to answer some questions.

The new thermal space of Alhama already has a company that has a firm interest in its exploitation, in addition contacts have been made with Alhama professionals to collaborate in the management of the spa.

The parties have been summoned to an upcoming technical meeting in Alhama in March to close the characteristics of the thermal center in its final location, within the La Cubana park, based on the study already carried out.

Steps taken from 2015 to date

The City Council has been working since 2015 with an action calendar for the promotion of Alhama to potential private investors.

There are currently at least two of them interested in participating in the Alhama new thermal space project.

In addition, the Consistory has been collecting information on the different thermal models of the country, holding various meetings with its main managers.

In 2016 a team from the Complutense University of Madrid made a collection of samples of the Alhama thermal water, of municipal ownership, from the well located in the Las Menas area.

The result of the analyzes determined the integrity of the mineral-medicinal properties of these waters, which since then are included in the Vademecum of Spanish Mineral-Medicinal Waters (soon there will be a new update), again placing Alhama within the national thermal map.

After the consulting study prepared by Gala Termal, on March 23, 2017, his presentation took place at the House of Culture, on a day on thermalism that included the participation, among others, of Francisco Maraver, Professor of Medical Hydrology in the Complutense University of Madrid, Antonio Freire, expert in Medical Hydrology and responsible for the work, Álvaro Varela and Mario Crescente, Architects, and Luis Ovejero, Medical Director of the Archena Spa.

In 2017, the Plenary approved unanimously of all political groups the non-structural modification No. 9 of the General Plan, to locate the equipment area (destined for the future spa) in the old children's playground, within the new La Cubana park, an urban change that is still being processed with the Autonomous Community.

The decision of this location was based on the Integrated Sustainable Urban Development study, through a participatory process at the end of 2015, in which sectoral meetings were held with associations, educational community, political parties and different social and business agents.

Being the preference of a large majority to maintain the new spa within the park of La Cubana.

This process coincided with the technical visit of the experts in thermalism to Alhama, who agreed on the suitability of the park area to locate this center.

That same year (2017) the Consistory signed an agreement with the Polytechnic University of Cartagena for students of Architecture to carry out different design projects of the future thermal center.

Likewise, he signed another agreement with the University of Murcia so that students of the Degree of Advertising and Public Relations contributed ideas about the brand of the Alhama spa.

Both collaborations resulted in two days of exhibition of works with proposals on the definition of the building and the name of the spa.

Next steps

The next and immediate initiative will be the tender for the design ideas competition for the new La Cubana park, where the spa is the first phase of this project, which will begin to be built in this legislature.

"We are working to make it a viable and sustainable project over time, which will help to value the mineral-medicinal waters and recover a fundamental part of the history and identity of Alhama, unknown to the youngest," said Mariola Guevara.
