The deputy of the Socialist Parliamentary Group Antonio José Espín has registered a motion in the Assembly to demand from the regional government the immediate authorization of the tender of the construction works of the new IES Valle de Leiva de Alhama de Murcia, as he committed himself to the educational community and the City Council of this municipality.
Espín recalled that for decades, the City Council and the educational community of Alhama are requesting the construction of a new center that replaces the current IES Valle de Leiva, which with more than fifty years of history, presents important deficiencies and facilities that, In addition to few, given the growing demand for students, they have become obsolete and in a state that is hardly repairable.
"After the popular consultation held in March 2016, in which the residents of the town were able to choose the location of the new center, the City Council and the Ministry of Education reached a series of agreements. The City Council had to transfer the municipal land for its construction in the indicated area, in addition to assuming the cost of the new construction project, to guarantee the speed of the process, "he said.
"This should include the optimization of the facilities of the El Praíco sports complex, as well as its expansion with a sports hall, for shared use (school and municipal) to serve the new institute, on behalf of the consistory," he added.
For its part, the Ministry of Education should tender the works as quickly as possible, once the land has been transferred, the project has been delivered and the technical issues resolved.
This project would be funded, for the most part, by ERDF funds, with a budget of more than 4 million euros.
The Socialist deputy stressed that the City Council has fulfilled its part of the agreement and has materialized all its commitments, in addition to providing the Autonomous Community with all technical issues of a municipal nature.
"He delivered in time and form, at the beginning of 2017, the project of construction of the new HEI, assuming its costs and with the approval of the technicians of the regional Administration; it ceded, in May 2017, the municipal land where the new educational facilities and, in February 2018, approved the concession of the urban planning license for the execution of the works, "he explained.
In addition, in September last year, it awarded the work of the sports hall that will serve the new institute and undertook the improvement works in the area, as well as the construction of the access road to the teaching center with which it had committed.
However, the Ministry of Education has not kept its word and, to date, has not authorized the bidding of the new HEI, despite having announced more than a year.
"This lack of commitment and the breach of its agreement with the City Council, are generating continuous unjustified delays in the execution of the project, in addition to a deep malaise between the families, teachers and students of the municipality."
"To this we must add that the Ministry plans to cover the budget of the works with FEDER Funds for the period 2014-2020, so, if not executed in the coming months, they could win and be lost," said the deputy socialist.
"We have been obliged to demand in the Assembly the regional government to exercise its responsibility and stop unreasonably delaying the construction of new IES Valle de Leiva. The Alhameños and Alhameñas do not deserve the disloyalty of a Government that fails to fulfill its commitments in a blatant manner, so, we Socialists demand explanations and the immediate tender of these works so that they can begin during the first half of 2020, "concluded Espín.
