Ecologists in Action has denounced the start of at least 30 specimens of the shrub called Halocnemum strobilaceum, which is a protected species and listed as Vulnerable in the Regional Catalog of Protected Wild Flora of the Region of Murcia1.
The events have occurred in forest lands of the municipality of Alhama de Murcia, belonging to the Protected Natural Area of the Saladares del Guadalentín, in the area of La Mata, in the Siscarejo.
The destruction of these specimens of protected flora has occurred on the occasion of the realization of some works without a license, in order to install a pipe for underground agricultural irrigation, with the realization of a ditch of almost two hundred meters in length and one meter and medium depth, affecting protected plant species present.
Ecologists in Action denounces that, in addition, the area in which the facts are reported is an area especially sensitive to soil transformation due to the presence of aquatic, raptor and steppe species, mostly protected and some quite threatened by habitat loss , which use it as a nesting, hunting and championship area.
They highlight species such as the Aguilucho Cenizo, the Sisón, the Ortega, or the Alcaraván, among others.
On the other hand, remember that the Saladares del Guadalentín have several environmental protection figures, since in addition to being a Protected Natural Area, they also have the status of Community Interest Place (SCI) and Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA).
For all these reasons, the organization has demanded in its complaint that not only the works be paralyzed and sanctions imposed on the offenders, but that the damage caused be restored, restoring this valuable ecosystem of our territory.
