Restoration of the network of trails in the Sierra de La Muela (05/06/2018)

The mayor of Alhama, Diego Conesa, presented this morning the work carried out in the last three years, driven by the City Council, for the recovery of thirty miles of traditional trails in the Sierra de La Muela.

Next to him have been the Councilor for the Environment, Antonio García, the Peña Mayor of Gebas, Manuel Gambín, and the Environmental Technician, Manuel Águila.

Periods of action

The start phase took place during the years 2015-2016.

In it, documentary research was carried out in various archives and ancient cartography, the first field trips to locate the old trail paths, as well as the documentary rescue to know the historical details of these trails.

There were also interviews and tours with elderly people who used the roads of La Muela and there were various coordination meetings with the general management of Medio Medio.

Phase I, from October 2016 to March 2017, included the first explorations, identification of paths and first works of restoration of trails.

In many cases it was about the opening of a new route, because the old one disappeared due to the forest repopulation of the 70s of the last century.

Cuesta del Salto, La Rellana, Los Corrales, Los Molinos and Fuente Borrego were recovered and improvements were made in others, including Cresta de la Muela, Rento and Vereda de los Azagadores.

In addition, small economic amounts were used in the incorporation of the first signaling of the network and some materials for the consolidation of the firm on the trails.

A second phase was developed from November 2017 to April 2018. During this period, repair work was carried out (mainly due to the rains) of the rehabilitated trails, taking advantage of the opportunity to introduce significant improvements in some of the routes (correction of slopes and erosion processes). , incorporation of new water passages, elimination of trails and shortcuts, construction of sashes and albarradas, etc.).

It was acted in all the aforementioned paths, plus those of the hill of the castle of Alhama, those of Las Balsas and Loma Gutiérrez (Gebas), that of the hill of La Molata (El Berro) and the one that communicates Gebas with El Berro.

During this period, numerous environmental restoration activities have also been incorporated, not only on trails, but also in natural spaces of the municipal area where this City Council has its own farms.

Thus, for example, in addition to intervening in the trails of La Muela and Gebas, work has been done to eliminate exotic species, remove waste and improve natural vegetation both in the Saladares del Guadalentín (La Alcanara farm and Las Salinas lagoons). ) as in the Guadalentín River itself, it has acted in the municipal estate of the El Berro ravine, in improving the birth of Fuente Borrego or in beginning to recover the old route of the Espuña pipe as it passes through the Sierra de La Muela.

In addition, small economic quantities were used in the improvement of the signaling of the network and in the materials of correction of erosive processes, subjection of slopes, etc.

An informative video has been made about the restoration works of La Muela paths and the new experiences generated.

Shortly, a brochure-map will be presented on the entire network of trails and later a book on its history and routes.

Total inversion

These two phases have counted with workers of the Program of Promotion of Agrarian Employment (District Councils) financed by the SEPE (Public Service of State Employment), of the Ministry of Employment and Social Security.

The municipal contribution was € 25,912.

It should be noted that part of the work has been allocated to other environmental restoration activities within Phase II, which have not been the recovery or improvement of trails.
