The City of Alhama de Murcia held one of the most important jobs in energy efficiency and combating climate change.

To this end, it has conducted the presentation of an energy audit work carried out in collaboration with the Autonomous Community and City Council of Alhama de Murcia, through the contracted technical services and municipal technical services.

These actions affect not only economic savings but also bring results in a healthy and sustainable impact in reducing CO2 emissions.

In the election program of the current municipal government, one of the main points was at least reducing the cost of the energy bill by at least € 110,000 at the end of the legislature.

To achieve this reduction, it has had the collaboration of the director of the Institute of Development, Javier Celdrán, and advice from the Director of Technology Center for Construction, Antonio Trigueros, along with a series of investments in the municipality.

Alhama is one of 14 municipalities that are participating very actively in the fight against climate change and commitment to energy efficiency and renewable energy.

To do this, this council is attached, since 2008, the so-called European Covenant of Mayors 20-20-20 including ELENA-FUENSANTA project in order to achieve by 2020 the following targets: reduction by 20% CO2 emissions, 20% increase in energy production from renewable resources, and achieve 20% energy efficiency.

The objective of Elena-Fuensanta project, funded by the European Investment Bank in which the actions that have been made in Alhama embark, is to induce 31 million € investment among all municipalities in the region of Murcia to produce this type of savings.

The audit was performed in the city of Alhama de Murcia in the framework of this project, as basic working tool, it is divided into two parts:

The first part is related to street lighting, in which the performance in the type of lighting in 4,371 points of light the municipality and districts are proposed, with the change of elements of the most modern streetlights or complete replacement thereof, a very traditional technology and low efficiency to more advanced technology such as LED or discharge of high efficiency that will produce economic savings of 333,412 € to 86,000 € of energy consumption.

A saving of 74% of the electricity bill of City Hall.

The cost of the investment is € 1.1511.614 with a simple payback period of 6 years.

For it is already drawing up a first draft replacement lamps for the same financial year 2016 with a next investment to € 300,000

The second part of this energy audit is related to public buildings, with an analysis work all facilities, collection of consumption data, reviewing supply contracts, etc.

Public buildings are: Town Hall, Antonio Machado and schools Gines Diaz-San Cristobal, the Archaeological Museum Los Baños, and the swimming pool.

The actions of City Hall would be on Isolation, iluminarias change and adjustment of electricity supply contracts and with an investment of 53,558 € which would produce a savings of 30% in energy consumption.

In schools Antonio Machado and Ginés San Cristobal include 5 lines of action: interior lighting with high efficiency, as is already done in part this summer, renovation of air conditioning, improved insulation and airtightness and optimization of contracts.

In the case of Antonio Machado School, also it is carried out changing oil boiler to natural gas.

The overall investment amounts to € 75,216 and provides a savings of € 6,700 annually.

The most significant measures include optimization of contracts and the renewal of the use of LED lighting and use of sunlight, with a saving of € 4,255, and a period of return on investment with lower next 3 years.

In the Archaeological Museum Bathrooms, modification and adjustment of the electricity tariff of the building, with savings of € 1,453 annually it would take place.

This would improve the profitability of the performances in the thermal insulation of the building shell and air conditioning equipment as complementary to implement additional measures.

Finally, the swimming pool is the largest electricity and fuel consumption.

In this case they are carried out performances in lighting, tariff revision, replacement gas boiler, sealing and review of the pumping stations.

All these measures represent savings of more than 50% of fuel and electric 53,168 kWh.

The total investment would be € 48,919, resulting in savings of € 22,949 with repayment period of 2 years.

In total, the investment Alhama City Council would have to make to achieve these savings would cost € 1,722,307 with which an annual saving of 285,841 € (70% cost reduction) and amortization 6 years produce approximately.
