The Institute of Development of the Region (Info) has carried out two energy audits to analyze the performance and energy consumption of street lighting and municipal buildings in the city of Alhama de Murcia.

The measures proposed in these audits, which are part of the European 'Elena-Fuensanta' (European Local Energy Assistance) project, which would mean a cost savings of 285,841 euros on the electricity bill of the council, in addition to reducing CO2 emissions by 863 tons , equivalent to have in the village a forest with an area of 43 football fields.

The director of Info, Javier Celdrán, today presented these two audits the mayor of Alhama de Murcia, Diego Conesa, noting that "the 'Elena-Fuensanta' project is allowing us to have a very detailed knowledge of the energy performance of administrations and in particular local, and use this information to propose measures for energy efficiency to enable further progress in the goals set in the Europe 20-20-20 strategy. "

To the municipality of Alhama de Murcia, most prominently the measure proposed in these audits, both from the point of view of savings and investment, is the replacement of the luminaries of the 4,371 points of light in the municipality and its districts LED technology .

This renewal would require an investment of 1,511,614 euros and generate annual savings of 247,255 euros, representing 74 percent of the electricity bill of City Hall.

Regarding public buildings, and after studying all the property of the municipality, the audit intends to conduct a series of performances at the town hall, in the swimming pool, at the Archaeological Museum Los Baños and colleges of Education infant and Primary Antonio Machado and San Cristobal.

Some of the measures proposed in these five properties refer also to change lighting, as well as improvements in heating and cooling, optimization in the management of contracts and electricity rates or improvements in thermal insulation of buildings.

More than 9 million invested in the region

The Alhama de Murcia is one of 14 municipalities committed to the European project 'Elena-Fuensanta, an initiative of the European Commission to combat climate change and progress in Europe 20-20-20 strategy, which is marked as aim to achieve savings of 20 percent in energy consumption by 2020 and a reduction of 20 percent in emissions of greenhouse gases and ensure that 20 percent of the energy consumed comes from renewable sources .

In the region, the 'Elena-Fuensanta' project has run 18 projects, the vast majority by municipalities, which involves an investment of 9,177,074 euros and an effective energy saving 8 million Kw / h, and generating 4 million Kw / h in renewable energy.

This means that with the measures carried out has been achieved stop emitting 2,640 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, equivalent to the daily consumption of 1,500 cars on the roads in the region for a year.

In total, the project will mobilize an investment of close to 40 million euros, which will save on energy bills of municipalities and other administrations of more than 4.5 million euros a year and a saving in energy consumption at least 40 percent, and a reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases more than 11,800 tons annually.
