Dr. Hans-Peter Stika, from the University of Hohenheim, visits the Castle sites this week (16/09/2019)

Hans-Peter Stika (Stuttgart, Germany), doctor in Archeobotany and Archeology, and specialist in carpology (study of fruits, cereals and seeds in archaeological contexts) will make a visit to Alhama on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 September 2019, with the objective of knowing in situ the medieval sites of Cerro del Castillo, through the Department of Culture and Heritage.

Previous studies have been carried out on them that complement the research tasks that are being carried out by the researcher Dr. Mireia Celma Martínez, a doctor in Prehistoric Archeology, a specialist in anthracology (study of the woods and coals of archaeological contexts) .

This visit and the knowledge acquired will serve to plan the analytical work plan for the year 2020, in order to make publications of international impact that make Alhama's heritage known, in collaboration with the University of Murcia.

The objectives of the carpological study are to determine the vegetable diet of the population and make an approximation to the paleoenvironment of the area between the eighth and sixteenth centuries.

During the visit the works and results obtained to date and review of the state of the matter will be treated, by reviewing the available materials resulting from the excavations that are being carried out.

In the same way, in these days, the programming of the intervention plan for the collection of archaeobotanical samples will be traced, both in the excavations carried out in the Castle within the 1.5% Cultural project, and in the programmed excavations of the Las Paleras site that are held every year.

The work plan during your stay is as follows:

· September 17, arrival of the researcher at Alicante airport at 8:40 a.m.

The archaeological sites of Las Paleras and El Castillo are visited, with an exhibition of the theoretical frameworks of work by the management team and a proposal and assessment of collection of soil samples by the specialist in strategic points of the archaeological sites to increase knowledge, with the discussion about suitability and adequacy to research throughout the visit.

In relation to restoration actions, the collection of sediment samples in rooms and wall areas for later analysis, will proceed to establish a protocol that is essential for the final results.

From the frames that are defined, the soil samples will be processed using the technique of recovery of flotation debris and, thus, obtain the archaeological botanical record of the deposits.

· On September 18, laboratory work will be carried out at the facilities of the Town Hall of the Audiovisual Room of the Old Square and the Archaeological Museum of Los Baños through the recognition of the general archeobotanical heritage and the specific carpological materials, determined So far, as well as the pending samples of its analysis.

· On September 19, the trip is made during the morning to Alicante, for the scheduled flight at 2:15 p.m.
